Early June sights and sounds

yellow brick elementary school in evening light
Summer vacation
Schoolrooms so quiet these days
Ten weeks for playing

first pink lily blooming in morning sun
Smooth pink petals bright
Signal of June and summer
Cicadas come soon

fieldstone foundations of ruined barn adjacent to bike path
Old barn stone walls bare
With new bike path speeding by
Where are the old days?

fishing from riverbank as seen from kayak midstream
Luring fish to bite
Fishing pole in hand on shore
Feeling summer sun

kayaks on car rooftop at boat launch site of river
Kayaks set to launch
Ceaseless the Grand River flows
Down to the Big Lake

Big waves churn today
Channel passage rougher now
Wind out of the west

1900s cottage kitchen flooded in afternoon light
Many summers pass
June vacationers arrive
To relax again

old tree with new branches coming on stump of sawed off limb
Limb off the old tree
Brings back more life on both sides
Adding more green leaves

predawn pink and purple sky over lake
Quiet lake predawn
Rosy skies over treetops
Water slumb'ring on

metal rowboat turned over on shore in woods
Old steel rowboat rests
The lapping waves not far off
Memories afloat

circle of large flat rocks on sunset beach of lake
Dreaming on the beach
Making meaning is not hard
Wind and time change things

robin standing next to next atop porch loudspeaker
Fledglings soon will go
Empty nest then grows quiet
No more calls for food

lakeshore beach with raccoon tracks
Raccoons on the shore
Before sun-up they walked here
Seeking food and drink

run sunshades above outdoor seating, blue sky above
So bright the June sky
Above outdoor shaded seats
Food tastes best this way

brass plaque affixed to cedar tree at riverside
River trees and lives
Marked by metal names and dates
The current flows on

historical dining porch, linen tablecloth, centerpiece
Calm after breakfast
The hours pass before dinner
Brings guests back to eat

sun shines on BBQ cookers behind hotel kitchen
Weekly barbeque
Cooked mid-June to Labor Day
Then to rest again

dawn light on distant lake; foreground lawnchairs
Bright shines the water
As day breaks, color returns
Across the whole lake

dawn light casts long shadows of sidewalk weeds
Beauty not long weeds
Show off on summer sidewalks
Short lives for them here

morning heavy dew on long grass backlit
Heavy dew last night
Drenches the long grass today
Lots for bugs to drink

streams of early light pours through fog in road
Golden sunlight streams
Down the tree-flanked road just now
Turning night to day

after breakfast, empty plates with silverware stacked
Breakfast dishes wait
The staff coming to clear off
Fresh food memories

Logging work goes on
Thinning forestland again
Silence falls after

Each wave moves the wood
Farther away from its roots
Then stranded at last

deep red peony shriveled a week past its prime
Blooming a while back
Now waiting for the petals
To fall to the ground

parent with 2 young kids at splash park
Water sprays to cool
Hot summer days and children
At the new splash park

Defining "Photo Haiku," reflecting on " 写真俳句

https://shashin-haiku.org [added purple text] The webpage about "what is a photo haiku" stirs thoughts about some of the issues and considerations when putting visual and verbal layers together. The joining of word and picture is known in Japan by various references to the 5-7-5 structured image poems; for example,  shahai , haisha , photo haiku, photo 575, and so on. The example in this screenshot from the webpage at  https://shashin-haiku.org/写真俳句とは has a mother and child peering at the myriad koi (carp) filling a shady spot in a channel of moving water. One way to put the verse into English is: Mama and child / A moment at the streamside / Shining so brightly. Some people begin with their text and then seek a photo that relates somehow to the verbal "snapshot," either closely fitting the haiku, or more loosely associated with the feelings carried in the words. Others will see something that catches their eye for some reason and then later they come up with a ...

Between fall and winter's first hints

Visual haiku from October 6 to ice in birdbath 23 October 2023 Wet October bright Morning wetland colors true Shine in the cloudbreaks Too weary just now The cart can rest in the sun Mind preoccupied Leaves fall stiffly down The wet cement later dries Leaving time's traces Bodhisattva head Fluid essence now made hard Far from East Asia Fresh asphalt and paint Make riding such great pleasure Rolling through the days Racing morning clouds Fly over bright fall treetops Birds watch day breaking One tree so vivid Announcing cold days to come More colors ahead Myriad pond life Diverse microbiota Thrive in quiet rot Living roots' power Push through petroleum crust Thirsting for sunshine Fall color and sculpture Bathe in October sunshine Winter days coming White contrail above Streaks over the fall colors Apples bob below Dappling on green leaves Maples soon red flames to be The nights grow colder Glittering fall light Makes leaves of maple so bright Pushing winter back Pathway statue...

Mild February feels like March

Snow shovel at rest Winter takes a break these days Rising global heat   Shaggy frost on stone Fades in the spring-like morning Comes again tonight A lone pine needle Bears the heavy frost for now Knowing it soon melts Winter sumac bows With frost its furry blanket Thinking of spring days Capped in copper frost No need to light the pathway Morning light is fine Gliding under ice Open water for breathing Chilly scales and tails Unmoving boulder Feels winter breaking a little Pines stand ever green Sun-bleached railings stand Zig-zagging across the pond Sumac on one side Boat landing frozen Eight or nine weeks yet to go Before it arrives Flutter in mild breeze February feels like March But winter stays still No baseball today It's still winter after all Teams come in two months Wetland boardwalk bright Buzzing drone high overhead Sees the baseball fields
